Flannel Quilt for Ken

This flannel quilt was in the making for a few months. The quilt was totally made using shirt fabric and fabric rescued from the op-shops (opportunity shops). As soon as I knew that we were visiting Ken at the Gold Coast I started making this quilt for him. Ken reads a lot and I thought the quilt would keep him warm while sitting in his favorite chair. It is a very simple quilt because I was not sure how he would have reacted to a more fancy quilt. In the end, he liked the quilt and has been showing off to everyone since he got it.

I asked to take a photo of him with the quilt. Ken used to lived in Samoa and he said it is like wearing a Samoan lavalava (sarong). He wrapped it around his waist while I snapped some photos.

And here is how it looks when it is open. I did not put a border on it because it looks great without it. The fabric for the large green rectangle blocks was 100% wool that I found at the op-shop. It came from Scottish House of the UK. It was a great find and unused.

The first day when we arrived Ken showed us all the new development around the neighborhood. The apartment was in walking distance to all amenities including the monorail connecting to the Conrad Jupiter Casino . Not that I am into casinos, but I don't mind a free ride on the monorail .

I was down at the market place the next day. It was quite warm and the sun was very harsh there in Queensland. A bit of a shock for us coming from Melbourne's winter. I had to wear a hat everywhere I went. My very faithful hat. I take it with me to all the trips I have made.

On our last day we took Ken and his friends Vasso and Peter to lunch at a new Greek seafood restaurant, George'S Paragon. Lunch at George's was one of the highlights of my holiday. I forgot to mention that apart from doing very little there we did managed a couple of games of Bocce, the oldest Italian ball game. I was teamed up with Peter while DH and Ken were a team. Needless to say, Peter and I beat them on both occasions! It was a fun and relaxing ball game to play. If you wandered what Bocce is, I have found a great history about it here.
