Some Great Books

Either I'm lucky or I am at the right place at the right time! In this case, I'm both lucky and being at the right place most of the time. Working in a library is a blessing. If I did not work in a library I wouldn't have come across so many wonderful and amazing books. To top it off, I can get them cataloged for me on the spot and I can be the first to borrow them.

Some of the books I'm showing today are the ones I got for myself. It doesn't matter how many books I come across daily, I still want to own some of them or most of them! On my blog cruising I come across many great books that I want to buy to keep. Today I want to share a couple of them with you.

Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker is a new book by Jennifer Chiaverini. As you may know, Jennifer Chiaverini is the author of Elm Creek Quilts series. You often hear "the cover sells the book". In this case it was true. When I saw the cover of Mrs. Lincoln in her blue dress with the word dressmaker on it the book was sold!  Needless to say, I haven't had time to read it yet. Anyway, the main thing is, I got it! If you haven't seen Lincoln the movie, please do. Mrs Lincoln's dresses were fantastic as was one special quilt at the end. Don't miss it!

Another book I ordered from Amazon is 15 Minutes of Play by Victoria Findlay Wolfe from 15 Minutes of Play Blog. I have been following Victoria on her blog for a while now and when she brought out this book I knew I would have to have it. I was planning a basket quilt using the retro fabric I blogged about here. So when the book arrived I knew that I would have to make the basket quilt using the book as a guide. I made the first block to see how I would like it and I must say, I'm thrilled with it!

I have made a few more basket blocks at the weekend. I did them as part of my iPhone Photography workshop assignment. The assignment was on "Telling Stories". My story was on how to make a basket block. It was fun to make the blocks and post them up on the workshop course space to share with everyone.

The book Eucalypts - A Celebration by John Wrigley and Murray Fagg is a library book that Jillian Flinch posted about on Facebook and my wonderful library got a copy. It's a fantastic book that every dyer should have a copy off.

Two Japanese books on basket weaving. These are also the library books. We have excellent  Japanese collection here too. I think I borrowed most of the books from this collection.

These books are in Japanese, but no worries! The pictures say a thousand words in this case. I think I'm a basket weaver at heart. I took after my mother who was a basket weaver. She mainly used bamboo in her weaving. The top book is for bamboo baskets.

This great Textile book is by Mary Schoeser and is newly published. It has a wonderful collection of textile work from around the world. I was excited to find my weaving teacher Ika White has a couple of her works in there as well. Another book to go in my wish list and hoping that my family will get for me for my Birthday this year!

I hope you are reading some good books too. There is a lot of talk these days about ebooks, but call me old fashioned if you may, I love books to touch and feel. I downloaded a few ebooks to my iPad, but so far I haven't finished any.

Until next time
Nat

Wow! What fun books! Your little scrap baskets turned out great and I love the color you used as a background. You were definitely lucky and in the right place.

I did not realize your mom was a basket weaver. That must be where the wonderful talent gene came from.

Your baskets made my cold, gray, and windy day a little sunnier! It is one of my favorite patterns, the other is the Ohio Star. Did you see that Victoria won at the Quiltcon convention this weekend for a fantastic Double Wedding Ring Quilt? Wowza! Your book list has me searching Amazon. I always thought being a librarian would be an excellent job, all those books! But then, I guess I couldn't just sit and read and get paid for it. LOL! Or a researcher! I could read and get paid to learn! I will never give up my books. There is something about the heft of a book and the motion of turning a page that has me entranced. Wishing you a beautiful week with more treats ahead. :)

Such great finds, Nat! And love seeing your basket blocks in progress! I used to wish to work in a library too... surrounded by books...*swoon*... I love the tactile quality of books in print. But I have since getting a iPad at Christmas been dipping into the realm of ebooks, especially using the Kindle app. I'm surprised at how much I am enjoying reading in this format. There will be those books I must read, feel the print book. But for some reading, "lighter" reading, I'm OK using the iPad. Oddly, I'm finding I'm reading even more since going digital with books! Sorry to be slow to visit... I've got the flu. First my hubby TJ had it, now me. We like to share things. ;o) Happy Days, my friend ((HUGS))

Hi Nat, lovely stash of books ;-)
The one on the basket weaving I like most, I think. Basket weaving must be such an ancient craft !!!!

Nat, I loved this post, what a feast! I haven't seen the movie, Lincoln, but now I have another reason to do so. (I saw your photo of this on Instagram!) And the 15-minute one is extremely appealing and so are your basket blocks. The other books for their sheer beauty. Oh my! Thanks! xo
