Dutch Scarf Quilt

I have been so inspired by Kathie's mini quilts lately that I thought I would try to make some. Large quilts take me forever to finish. A lot of the time I get side tracked or bored with them. A mini quilt is quick and fast to piece and it shows as much detail as larger quilts do.

This quilt was made to fit inside the scarf Ria sent me from The Netherlands. Red, white and blue are the colours of the Netherlands. I will call it Dutch Scarf Quilt. The block is 1.5" square by 8 blocks. The total size fits perfectly inside the scarf without losing too much of the border details. I will hand quilt it and bind it in blue.

I tried it on my timber chest of draws and it sits beautifully there. After I finished it I pinned it up on the back of my couch for a few days. The more I look at it the more I like it! Yes it will look even better after it is quilted. Any suggestions on how I should quilt it?

What a beautiful selection of fabrics! Your quilt is beautiful and I agree that mini quilts are wonderful! I am actually on the lookout for some Dutch fabrics as I live in Australia ~ am of Dutch descent and making a tribute quilt. So if anyone can let me know the web addresses of some good fabrics shops, please email me! Thank you, Ann

Hi Nat!

Your mini quilt really shows off the scarf! Now you will always have a sweet story to go with the quilt.

I also love mini-quilts. Someday I will have a wall of nothing but my mini quilts.

Great job!

What a beautiful idea with the scarf - the best of both worlds - the sensational border showing off your beautiful little squares. Very nice, indeed.

That floral design in the corner of the scarf would make a lovely quilting motif -- make it large enough to fit into one quarter of the space with the flowers facing the center (from the corners) ... maybe with your initial cord-quilted in the center.

This is just beautiful - Natima. Did you applique those blocks onto the scarf, or did you cut up the scarf for the border fabrics and piece them?

I love love love the colors.

What a neat idea for the scraf, it's a fabulous pattern for it. I would have suggested simple quilting, the border is the star there.

Wow! Really stunning. I'd keep the quilting in the center very simple. Maybe outline some of the scarf design to give it dimension.

Hi Nat, what a great little quilt you made from that scarf! It looks so gorgeous!
I saw your email first this morning (it's 9.45 am here, and there are spring holidays.... so I'm not so early...). I quickly came here to see your blog! And WOW what a lovely picture.
You had a really lovely idea and combined Australia with the Netherlands....
About the quilting: I think I agree with Linda, a few comments above.. So you keep the quilt in style with the fabric.
I'm curious what you decide on! Lovely day and a big hug from me!!

How about quilting a swirly pattern allover that echos the swirly shape in the border?

OH I just love this little quilt
that scarf is just beautiful, makes a wonderful border, how lucky you are that she sent it to you
I love the colors in this quilt too.
I would quilt lines right down the middle of the squares horizontally and vertically makes it easier and you don't deal with the seams, trust me on this I learned the hard way! the border I think I would just quilt lines all around it every inch or so. It won't take away from the design.
here let me send you a picture of a quilt I did that with.

What a great idea! I love how you tucked the one-patch into the beautiful scarf...absolutely the most clever idea! I am drawn to red, white and blue quilts anyway, and this one has the perfect balance of the 3 colors to my eye! That's a way to make the perfect gift even better!

In stitches,
Teresa :o)

What a great idea! Lovely colors you have added to the scarf! How did you add the squares to the scarf? My idea is to keep the quilting to a minimum on the squares and outline the flowers on the scarf...?

Well it is so intricate that a simple quilt line so as not to take away from design? That is a problem. I really like it and what a concept!!It is adorable..and looks good on that table

Good job!! I like small projects too. One main reason, is I can quilt them myself and they use way less batting.
